A lot of people have never been, have never aspired to be, and might never
be to America, but they feel that they have read or known enough to be called
Americans.
There approach to every
Nigerian situation is always “if it was in America”. They are so myopic in
labeling themselves good and Americans better. They avoid made in Nigeria
goods, referring them as inferior, and go for the made in wherever goods that
looks so superior.
They fine tune their
accent to sound like the American accent they learnt from watching Hollywood.
They follow the American trend; blushes that are so red like bruises on their
cheeks, short dresses, and designers but empty handbags.
They prefer to blame the
government for what they have done or failed to do, yet they see nothing wrong
in those civic duties they failed to do as citizens.
The fact remains that, no
matter how long you idolize America, how good you imagine America or Americans
to be. America will always remain America, and you will always remain a
Nigerian.
You can either decide to
shape Nigeria into a better nation or you can waste your life savings at the
Embassy, seeking for an American visa, and maybe the rest of your life, looking
for a Green Card.
